I’m Free – The Story of Allen Early (San Carlos Apache)

Allen, a San Carlos Apache, was raised in the traditional by his father. His dad sent him away to school.  Soon Allen got involved in alcohol, drugs, and gang life.  He became so violent that the people in his community wanted him put away. But jail couldn’t hold him. He escaped many times.  Finally, after a successful manhunt, he was placed in solitary confinement.  He tried to hang himself but failed.  So he decided to starve himself to death.  It was then that a man came into the jail and shared his personal story about how he had been set free.  Allen listened through the walls of his cell… and what happened next changed his life forever.

after i received a cd given to me by a local church i just went to for help that day because my church i went to long ago was closed this past Sunday, i knew it was time to get myself back in service to the Almighty. i am part Ojibwe from MN and Chiricahua Apache from AZ. My now deceased dad Arnold who was once a “wino” from St. Louis MO. but who was saved some years ago. i had only recently reconnected with him and was not able to establish a relationship with before he passed. i live in east central MN and when i started listening to this cd that evening, yesterday, i knew it was the Lord Jesus speaking to me even though it sounded like my dad Arnold speaking. the coincidences between this mans story and my struggle with my own demons was too many for me not to tell someone. thank you Allen and the Storyteller, and the Vineland Native American Chapel Pastor Les Parr and his wife Yvonne, who gifted me this cd. But most of all my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I grew up in Apache Junction, my parents were missionaries with an organization called the American Indian Crusade, and through our affiliation with the AIC we met Allen Early and his family and spent much time with him. As a child, I was impressed and mesmerized hearing him tell his life story and watching the movie that was made about his life (called Apache Fire, I think). Sorry to see that he passed away; I was hoping to reconnect in person, although I’d have been surprised if he remembered me as a child. Best wishes to his family and friends. His fire burns on having been deeply encoded in our brains with much admiration, love, and awe.
